Feeling Stuck After Being Fired or Laid Off? Here’s How to Release the Energy
Because the heaviness of a job ending can linger long after you have logged off for the last time.
How to Let Go of the Emotional Weight From a Job That Ended
Losing a job, whether you are laid off, fired, or you have left a toxic work environment, can leave a mark that goes deeper than most people realize.
It’s not just about the paycheck or the title. It’s the emotional and energetic weight of what happened: the way you were treated, the stress that built up over time, or the sudden shock of it all ending.
If you’ve felt stuck, heavy, or even fearful about what is next after a tough job experience, you’re not alone. And that weight you are carrying? That’s literally the energy of the experience still sitting in your field.
This is part of my energy series:
Now let’s talk about how to release the cords and energy from a job experience that left you feeling stuck or weighed down.
What are energetic cords anyway?
Anytime we pour energy into something, people, places, projects, we form energetic cords. These cords connect us to the experience and can hold both positive and negative energy.
In the workplace, these cords might form through:
A manager or colleague you spent most of your time with
A project you invested years of your life in
A toxic environment that left you drained every day
When a job ends, those cords don’t just disappear. Did you know if you don’t consciously release them, you can keep carrying the energy with you into your next chapter?
Why releasing these cords matters
When cords stay attached, you might notice:
Replaying conversations or scenarios from your old job over and over
Feeling hesitant or fearful about starting something new
Carrying resentment or anger about what happened
Doubting your abilities even though you know you are qualified
Clearing these cords is not about erasing the experience or pretending it didn’t happen. It’s about reclaiming your energy so you can move forward lighter and more grounded!
How to release the energy
Here are a few ways you can start to release the cords from a difficult job experience:
Visualization:
Close your eyes and picture any cords that are still attached to you from that job. Maybe they are tied to people, places, or even projects. Then imagine yourself gently unplugging each cord, sending it back to its source with gratitude, and calling your energy back to yourself.Cord-cutting:
Write down everything you want to release from that job, the stress, the resentment, the fear, and safely burn or tear up the paper. Set the intention that as you destroy it, you are releasing the energy too.Energy-clearing practices:
Reiki, Akashic Records work, or even a salt bath can help you let go. In the metaphysical world, Epsom salt baths are known for clearing away negative or stagnant energy from your field. Epsom salts aren’t actually salt like the kind you cook with — they’re made of magnesium sulfate, which is known to relax muscles and support the nervous system physically. I love opening my Records before an Epsom salt bath, using Reiki to scan my energy, and asking to be shown what is ready to release. When I step out, I imagine all of it going right down the drain.Movement and grounding:
Go for a walk outside, dance in your living room, or spend a few minutes barefoot on the earth. Physical movement helps you release stored energy and process emotions.
My own experience
After my job loss, I was surprised at how much energy from that job was still clinging to me months later. I kept thinking about old projects, replaying conversations, and doubting my abilities.
When I finally did a cord-cutting, I felt the shift immediately. I could see where those cords had been tangled in my energy and how much space they were taking up. Releasing them did not erase the experience, but it allowed me to move forward without carrying the weight of it all.
This is exactly the kind of work I now help people with in my sessions. So many clients come in carrying energy from past jobs or difficult work experiences without even realizing it, and once we clear those cords, everything starts to feel lighter and more aligned.
The power of community
Having a supportive community makes all the difference when you are going through this. That is exactly why I created The Bloom Collective, a space where you can connect with others who understand what you are feeling and share from their own experiences. It’s a place to feel less alone and find encouragement as you step into your next chapter.
You can join The Bloom Collective community here on Facebook and also take part in my monthly virtual Energy Share. These gatherings are a beautiful way to experience Reiki, clear stuck energy, and receive support no matter where you are on your journey.
What I’m learning
Releasing the energy from a tough job experience is one of the most empowering things you can do for yourself. It’s a way to close the chapter and step into your next opportunity without dragging the old baggage with you.
If you’re feeling stuck or heavy after a layoff, being fired, or even leaving a toxic work environment, I hope this reminds you that you can release it. 🫶🏻
Take it one step at a time. Do one of the practices above. And know that you are calling your energy back with every little bit you let go of.
