Reiki Myths That Might Be Blocking Your Healing
Many people feel drawn to energy healing but hesitate after hearing confusing or critical opinions online. As a certified Reiki practitioner working with clients worldwide, I’ve seen these misunderstandings stop healing before it even begins.
Let’s clear up the most common myths about Reiki so you can access the support your body and energy might be quietly asking for.
Myth 1: Reiki Is a Religion
Reiki is not a religion, and it isn’t tied to any specific spiritual doctrine. It’s a Japanese healing technique that supports the nervous system and helps restore energetic balance. Even mental health resources like Cleveland Clinic clarify that Reiki is not a belief system.
In my practice, I’ve worked with people from all backgrounds including spiritual, religious, agnostic, and those who are simply curious. Reiki has supported each of them in different and meaningful ways.
Myth 2: You Have to Believe in Reiki for It to Work
Reiki doesn’t rely on belief. It works with your energy body, which exists whether or not you believe in energy healing. Some of my most profound sessions have been with people who were skeptical at first but open enough to show up.
This article also notes that Reiki can reduce stress and promote relaxation regardless of the recipient’s mindset.
Not sure what to expect? I break down what Reiki can feel like here.
Myth 3: Reiki Is Only for Physical Ailments
While Reiki is used in clinical settings for pain management, it’s also an effective tool for emotional healing. Most of my clients come to sessions for things like burnout, anxiety, grief, and big life transitions.
It’s a supportive space that helps regulate the nervous system and reconnect you to yourself. Learn more about the top 10 Reiki benefits, including science-backed outcomes like improved sleep and reduced cortisol.
Myth 4: Reiki Is Just the Placebo Effect
The subtle nature of Reiki can make it easy to dismiss, but subtle doesn’t mean ineffective. Multiple studies have shown measurable benefits like lower stress levels, improved heart rate variability, and decreased anxiety.
Even mainstream sources like Cleveland Clinic acknowledge Reiki’s impact on stress reduction and deep relaxation.
I also see this regularly in sessions. Clients come in with tension or emotional heaviness and leave feeling clearer, calmer, and more grounded.

Myth 5: Distance Reiki Doesn’t Work
Reiki isn’t limited by location. Remote sessions use intention and energetic connection, and can be just as effective as in-person ones. A 2024 study published on PubMed found that distance Reiki significantly improved heart rate variability, reduced blood pressure, and lowered anxiety in participants compared to a placebo.
Almost all my sessions are now virtual, and many clients say they feel more relaxed in their own space. Learn exactly how distance Reiki works in my blog post here.
Myth 6: Only "Gifted" People Can Practice Reiki
You don’t need to be psychic to learn Reiki. Anyone can be attuned and trained in the method. Reiki.org notes that the ability to give Reiki doesn’t come from talent, it comes from learning and practice.
In fact, many people who learn Reiki for themselves discover a deeper connection to their body, their boundaries, and their own healing intuition.
Why These Myths Matter
Misunderstandings around Reiki can stop people from getting the support they need. You don’t have to fully “get it” or feel anything huge to benefit. Reiki isn’t about performance or belief. It’s about presence and energetic support.
The best way to understand it is to experience it!
Real Client Experiences
After sessions, clients often tell me:
“I finally feel like I can exhale.”
“That thing in my chest just lifted.”
“I didn’t expect much, but I feel lighter.”
“My body actually feels safe again.”
These shifts are subtle but powerful, and they’re often exactly what someone needs to move forward.
