Creating a Home That Supports Your Energy
Why decorating is less about the aesthetic and more about how you want to feel.
How Your Home Shapes How You Feel
When we moved to Colorado, I knew it would take time to settle in — not just unpacking boxes, but feeling into how I wanted this home to feel.
If you’ve been following along, you know I’ve moved a lot. But this move felt different. The energy here in Colorado is nothing like what I was used to growing up in New York. The pace is slower, the air feels sharper, and the space feels wider. It’s not just about the physical square footage. It’s how the environment asks you to be more intentional with how you fill it.
In New York, I was used to squeezing into spaces. Every corner had to be functional and practical. But here, I’ve found myself wanting more open space, softer textures, and calmer colors. The energy asked for a different kind of nesting.
But getting to that point didn’t happen overnight. It takes time to figure out how you want your home to feel. Decorating isn’t just about picking furniture or hanging art. It’s about noticing how a room makes you feel when you’re in it. Does it feel spacious or heavy? Calm or chaotic?
For me, setting the tone always starts with a few anchors:
A clear kitchen counter in the morning
A small grounding spot by the window with a candle or a plant
Soft, warm lighting instead of bright overhead lights
Pieces that feel collected, not just bought for the sake of filling a space
One thing I’ve learned is that the energy of a home doesn’t settle all at once. It shifts as you live in it. Some corners reveal themselves as sacred spots, while others never quite feel right until you move something around.
When we first got here, I tried to recreate my old routines. I’d put my diffuser in the same spot I had back in New York, and it just didn’t feel the same. The air here is drier, the light hits differently, and my nervous system was craving a new flow.
I started paying more attention to how the rooms made me feel, not just how they looked. It’s like the house and I had to get to know each other.
Small Shifts That Make a Big Difference
If you’re feeling unsettled in your space, here are a few things I’ve done that always help me reset:
Clear one surface. I always start with the kitchen counter or my nightstand.
Let fresh air in. Even if it’s cold, opening a window for five minutes shifts the air.
Move something. Rearranging a plant, lamp, or chair can refresh how the room feels.
Light a candle or incense. Not just for the aesthetic, but to mark a reset in the space.
Tidy your digital space. Our screens carry energy too. I wrote more on that in Clear Your Feed, Clear Your Field.
Sometimes a room feels off and you can’t quite put your finger on why. I’ve learned to pause, plant my feet in the middle of the space, and take one deep breath. It’s nothing that needs to be elaborate. Just a chance to notice.
And then I’ll tidy one small thing. As a Virgo, I’m wired to want things to look better, so creating visual calm helps my nervous system settle and if I see even the smallest spot, I’ll blackout and 1 hour later have the entire room deep cleaned (lol). I’ve got the house pretty organized down to the little details — even Bagel’s toys have their own spot. She has the cutest under-the-sea themed basket because yes, we’re a sea creature household and she deserves a cute little corner too. 🧜🏻♀️
Those small details matter. When the space feels cared for, I feel more grounded in it. And when something feels off, a quick tidy and a small shift is usually all it takes to reset the vibe.
Your Home Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Feel Good
What I’ve learned from moving — and moving again — is that your home evolves with you. You don’t have to figure it all out in the first month. You don’t need to force a vibe that doesn’t feel natural. Sometimes, it takes living in the space, noticing what’s working (and what isn’t), and allowing yourself to change things as you go.
Decorating isn’t just about making your home look good. It’s about making it feel like a place that supports you.
And honestly, that can start with something as simple as clearing one surface, lighting a candle, and giving yourself permission to rearrange a few things until it feels right.
