What to Do After a Reiki Session
How to support your energy, process the session, and feel your best afterward.
You can expect to feel relaxed, clear, emotional, or even a little sleepy. All of that is completely normal. Everyone experiences Reiki differently, and your response may shift from session to session. Be sure to stay hydrated and give yourself time to slow down afterward. This helps your body and mind fully absorb the benefits of the work.
Whether your session was virtual or in person, the care you give yourself afterward is just as important as what happens during. Reiki works with your body and nervous system, which means you might feel shifts immediately or notice subtle changes in the days to follow. Here’s how to support the process.
Hydrate and nourish
Drink water throughout the day to help your body flush out anything it’s ready to release. Reiki may support your nervous system, lymphatic system, and emotional processing. Hydration is key in helping those systems function well. Try adding electrolytes or sipping on a warm herbal tea like peppermint, chamomile, or nettle. When it comes to meals, choose warm, grounding foods like soup, roasted vegetables, or oats to support your body’s natural detox and regulation processes. A mineral-rich drink or herbal tea can also feel grounding. Pair that with nourishing meals that feel comforting and easy to digest.
Slow it down
If you can, give yourself time to gently transition back into your day. Reiki invites your body into a state of deep rest, so shifting immediately into stimulation like email, social media, or a packed schedule can interrupt the benefits. Instead, choose something that brings you into the present. That could be a short walk, time outside, soft music, or simply sitting quietly with a warm drink. These small moments help your system stay regulated longer. Avoid jumping right into busy tasks or screens. Whether it’s a walk, stretching, or a few quiet minutes with a journal, a slower pace helps the integration stick.
Take note of any shifts
You might notice changes right away, or they might unfold slowly over the next few days. This can include improved sleep, lighter mood, more emotional awareness, creative inspiration, or tiredness, which is your body’s way of asking for rest. You may also find that certain thoughts, memories, or emotions surface more clearly. All of this is part of how energy begins to reorganize. Pay attention without needing to analyze. Just observe what shows up in your mood, clarity, energy, or sleep. Some people feel emotional release, while others experience creative flow or mental calm. There’s no right or wrong. Just notice.
Journal or reflect
Writing down how you felt during or after your session helps make the experience tangible. It doesn’t have to be deep. A few notes can help you recognize shifts over time. Try answering questions like: What sensations did I notice? What emotions came up? Did anything surprise me? Journaling can also give insight into what your body is asking for next, whether it's rest, boundaries, connection, or a creative outlet. Even a sentence or two can create a moment of reflection and self-connection.
Movement helps
Gentle movement supports the integration process by helping energy continue to flow. Reiki can stir up stagnant energy. Light movement like walking, stretching, yoga, or even cleaning your space can help you move that through. Think of it like giving your body an outlet to process. There's no need for intensity. Just choose something that feels easy and natural.
Rest if needed
Some sessions may leave you feeling refreshed and alert, while others may make you feel drowsy or emotionally tender. Both are valid responses. Don’t push yourself to be productive or get back to normal right away. Reiki works best when integration is honored. If your body is asking for sleep, give it the support it needs. Quality rest is a major part of healing, and good sleep hygiene helps regulate everything from emotional balance to immune function. Even short naps or going to bed earlier can make a difference. How long do the effects last?
Everyone’s timeline is different. Some people feel a shift that fades gently throughout the day, while others may notice subtle changes over several days. Reiki continues to support your system beyond the session itself, so don’t be surprised if emotions, insights, or dreams surface later. Give yourself time to notice what unfolds without rushing to label or fix anything.
Avoid overstimulation
If you can, skip alcohol or anything overly stimulating like intense media or big social gatherings for the rest of the day. This helps your nervous system stay in that calm, regulated state and allows the energy from your session to fully settle. Science supports Reiki as a helpful tool in calming the body’s stress response, so the more you can protect that space, the better.
